Biographical Note
Barbara Shepherd worked on the 1940 American Negro Exposition held at the Chicago Coliseum. She also served in staff positions in several social service organizations. The photographs she donated were originally owned by Mr. James W. Washington.
Scope and Content
This small collection consists of images of the American Negro Exposition and the Boy’s Town project. James W. Washington is featured in many of the images. Washington, founder of American Boystown Corporation, planned and developed the ANE while serving as president for the event. Immediately after the Exposition, Washington centered his attention on the building of Boys' Town, a home and school near Momence, Illinois. Boys' Town would care for and train underprivileged boys from diverse backgrounds. The photographs in this collection reflect this history.
Arrangement
The fifteen photographs listed in this collection are arranged alphabetically by title.
