Historical Note
Amundsen High School was constructed in 1930 and named for Roald Engebreth Gravning Amundsen, a Norwegian polar explorer who disappeared while on a rescue mission to the North Pole in 1928. The school is located on Damen Avenue at Foster Avenue in Winnemac Park on the North Side of Chicago and is part of the Chicago Public Schools district. For its first few years Amundsen served as a junior high school, but it was converted to a four-year high school in 1933 and has continued to serve as a high school since that time. In the 1960s, it also hosted junior college classes in the evenings.
Scope and Content
This collection consists mostly of student publications, including the school newspaper, The Amundsen Log, and the student yearbook, The Viking. It also contains Parent Teacher Association yearbooks and related material, newspaper clippings, a diploma, a few graduation programs, an alumni reunion program, and a small number of photographs.
Arrangement/Series Description
The collection is arranged in two series.
Series 1: General Historical Files, 1931-1987
This series contains Subseries A: Documents and Subseries B: Photographs. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically.
Subseries A consists primarily of Parent Teacher Association yearbooks and newspaper clippings from local papers about Amundsen High School. There are also a few graduation programs, a song booklet, an alumni reunion program, and a short story and song lyrics.
Subseries B contains one oversize class photograph from 1934 and six photographs of a 1949 Amundsen High School football game.
Series 2: Publications, 1933-1981
This series contains issues of the school newspaper, The Amundsen Log; volumes of the school yearbook, The Viking; and one issue of The Bullshevik Bugle, a humor magazine. It is arranged alphabetically.
