Three ceramic dishes each containing burning ethanol. Each dish has a different colour flame due to chemicals that have been added to the ethanol. Here they are (left to right): sodium chloride (yellow), potassium chloride (pale lilac) and barium sulphate (pale green). The colour of the flame is different for different elements and can be used to identify unknown substances.
