"On my 10th birthday a bicycle and an atlas coincided as gifts, and a few days later I decided to cycle to India...However, I was a cunning child so I kept my ambition to myself, thus avoiding the tolerant amusement it would have provoked among my elders."
—Dervla Murphy
Long before Elizabeth Gilbert ate, prayed and loved; and years before Cheryl Strayed found herself on the Pacific Coast Trail, Annie Londonderry and Nellie Bly traveled solo around the world, one by bicycle and the other by steamship and train. Dervla Murphy thought riding a bike from Ireland to India as well as a jaunt through Ethiopia with a mule would be fun. And Jan Morris not only traveled solo but became a prolific writer of travel books.
So, on March 1, Plan a Solo Vacation Day, as well as the start of Women's History Month, let's honor these intrepid women by picking up a travel guide, a road map, an atlas or just having a good spin of the globe. Where will your next adventure take you?
