What Would the Golden Girls Enjoy Reading?

"Thank you for being a friend, traveled down the road and back again!" We all know and love the theme song of our beloved tv friends. The Golden Girls premiered on September 14, 1985. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of their debut, here are four book recommendations for each character.

'Picture it.' Sophia walks into the library accompanied by Dorothy. She's still as feisty & hilarious as when we were first introduced to her. After cracking jokes and telling Dorothy's personal business, she asks for a book that takes her back to her younger years in Sicily. The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza, is a historical mystery that intwines the stories of two women: Sara-a modern-day chef and business owner, and her great-grandmother Serefina, who lived in Sicily in the 1900s. Sara inherits the land in Sicily where she learns the family secret that her great-grandmother was murdered on that land. She travels to Sicily to investigate. The Sicilian Inheritance

After Dorothy apologizes for Sophia's wise-cracks, she asks for her book recommendation. She is the sarcastic brain of the group. She's a facts-over-feelings girl and she's not afraid to check your grammar. Original Sins: the (mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism examines how the U.S. education system was intentionally designed to perpetuate racial hierarchies, impacting Black and Brown students. This book looks at the historical roots of the education system, highlighting how practices like standardized testing & disciplinary policies continue to disadvantage marginalized students. This is a perfect read for the former school-teacher. Original Sins

When Rose asks for her book recommendation, she goes into another litany of her St. Olaf stories. Though she maybe on the vapid side, she is cleverer and more tongue-in-check than anyone thinks. The Lager Queen of Minnesota is a tale of two sisters set in the 20th century. The younger sister Helen dreams of becoming a brewmaster. The older sister works in a nursing home for 37 years and is known for her delicious pies. This is a novel about family secrets, hard work, Midwestern values and the art of beer-making. This novel will speak to Rose's Minnesota heart. The Lager Queen of Minnesota

The free-spirited and vivacious Blanche walks in and ask for a book recommendation. She is the fierce and flirtatious girl of the bunch.  She is a romantic who follows her own rules and loves celebrity gossip.  Published for the first time in English, Fearless and Free: A Memoir by Josephine Baker captures her life and experience being the famous and fabulous person she is. She talks about her dance styles, her views on liberation and her many lovers; you'll feel like you're having a conversation over an espresso with Ms. Baker. This memoir is glamorous and fun just like the Southern Belle!  Fearless and Free
