What to Read After My Hero Academia

This month, anime fans say goodbye to a favorite as My Hero Academia (MHA) airs its final season. Though some characters appear in the spin-off My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, this marks the end of an era. We know finding a new series to love can be tough, but CPL is always adding more options. Here are a few you might enjoy when you're ready for something new.

While no manga is exactly like MHA, The Failure at God School by Natsu Hyūga comes pretty close. This manga is full of powered people, but rather than being superheroes, they're considered to be Himikos, or gods in training, only able to become full gods once they get through God School. Although Nagi believes herself to be powerless, she is sent to the school by a VIP God who senses her dormant power. Like MHA, this manga seems to be setting up the powerless character to become the most powerful with the help of a well-known figure.

If you liked seeing all the weird quirks every character had in MHA, you'll love the variety of assassins in Tank Chair by Manabu Yashiro. In this manga, Shizuka Taira and her brother Nagi live in a world where genetic doping is the norm, giving many people unique abilities, particularly assassins and their targets. While Nagi is currently wheelchair-bound in a comatose state, his sister discovered that if there is murderous intent near him, he will awaken enough to defeat any opponent. With each chapter introducing a different powered assassin and a ton of fast-paced action, this series follows in MHA's footsteps very well.

While not always the focal point of the manga, friendship was an important theme in MHA. If those dynamic relationships were what drew you in, then you'll probably enjoy Spacewalking With You by Inuhiko Doronoda. This manga tells the story of two boys who have a hard time fitting in, but through their uniqueness, create a bond with each other that helps both of them see the world through new eyes. Though this manga lacks the superpowers and action of MHA, it shares the heart of the story that friendship and teamwork go hand in hand.

If the high-speed action and stunning impact frames are what got you locked into the series, then you may want to try Dogsred by Satoru Noda. This sports manga follows a former figure skater as he discovers an interest in hockey. Though the subject matter feels very different from that of MHA, the intense competitive quality of the games mirrors the battles and tests Deku takes part in.

Finally, if you're not ready to jump into a whole new series, Four Lives Remain by Tatsuya Endo is a great palate cleanser. This manga is a collection of four short stories created by Endo (of Spy x Family fame) at the beginning of his career. From bounty hunting schools to moon empires, each story takes on a completely different world and characters, but they are all full of action, comedy and unexpected heroes.
