In Different for Boys, author Patrick Ness tells the story of Ant as he tries to understand his complicated relationships, but the rules aren’t always clear for boys who like boys. His best friends are Charlie, who is both homophobic and in a secret relationship with Ant, Jack, who may be gay and has become Charlie’s favorite person to rage at, and Freddie, who wants Ant to quit the soccer team and try out for rugby. This short illustrated novel follows Ant as he is confronted with loneliness, betrayal and support.
If you’re more into non-fiction, or the supernatural, The Amazing Beasts of Philippine Mythology might be more your speed. This encyclopedia of mythical creatures explores the monsters and magical beings, such as blood-sucking trolls and shape-shifting goblins, native to Philippine folklore. The book also includes vivid illustrations on every page along with Filipino translations.
If mystery novels are more your speed, check out Kill Joy, a prequel to the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series. In Kill Joy, Pip is not excited for her friend’s murder mystery party but she gets drawn into the fictional world and can’t stop until she unravels all of the clues.
