Scream At 30: Top Picks

In 1996, screenwriter Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven took their love of scary movies to the next level. The result? A slasher franchise that includes seven films, a television series, merchandise and games. Almost overnight, the Scream series revived interest in the then-waning horror genre, and has seen critical and commercial success having grossed $910 million worldwide at the box office.

The latest installment, Scream 7, will be released on February 27. In anticipation of the film’s release, here are a few titles that’ll be sure to inspire you to grab a ticket!

Woodsboro was a sleepy, unassuming town until Casey Becker answered a phone call from an unknown person. An innocent discussion of horror films turned into a sadistic game that she unfortunately loses. Little does the town know that Casey’s death is a slippery slope of mystery and secrets that center around young Sidney Prescott. There may be sequels, but there’s nothing like the original Scream.

When it comes to the past, there are some things you just can’t conceal. I Know What You Did Last Summer tells the story of four teenaged friends who are stalked by a deranged hook wielding killer one year after covering up their involvement in a car accident that killed a man. Terrifying, suspenseful, and spine chilling, this film spawned a sequel and a 2025 reboot.

Birthdays are meant to be fun. But this isn’t the case for Tree Gelbman, the protagonist of the Black comedy slasher Happy Death Day. After a night of partying, Tree wakes up on her birthday where she is lured into a tunnel and murdered by someone wearing a mask. However, she finds out that she isn’t dead but stuck in a time loop  which she desperately seeks to escape.

Love shouldn’t hurt. It certainly shouldn’t be deadly, either! In the romantic comedy slasher Heart Eyes, Ally and Jay are two co-workers who are mistaken for the titular serial killer who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. As the film progresses, they fall in love, and must juggle their burgeoning romance with a deadly killer on the loose.

One of the biggest life lessons to learn is that you can’t cheat death; even if you can see it beforehand. In Final Destination teenager Alex Browning cheats death after having a premonition of a catastrophic plane explosion. They leave the plane before the explosion, but Death has other plans….
