Remembering Anna Karenina

Next weekend, February 13 - 24, Joffrey Ballet Chicago is premiering Anna Karenina, the famous romance published in 1877 by Russia's renowned Leo Tolstoy. To prepare myself for viewing what is sure to be a spectacular performance, I've been curling up at home with my personal copy of the book. I'm planning on watching the movie versions too. With the novel around 800 pages, I doubt I'll finish everything in time. It doesn't matter though, because this powerful story - giving us an idea of what 19th century Russia might have been like for the well-to-do (not to mention chronicling the personal life and affairs of a particular and very intriguing family bound by rigid political and social structures) - is worth going back to time and time again. Revisit or introduce yourself to the saga with these materials.
