Meet Chicago Children’s Author Candace Fleming

I've always been a huge fan of historical fiction, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I fell in love with historical biographies. Luckily, one of my favorite historical biographers is also a Chicago author! That is why I'm so excited to introduce you to Candace Fleming. Candace Fleming writes historical biographies for younger readers so you can start loving these books at an earlier age than I did.

I first "met" Candace Fleming when I picked up a copy of Our Eleanor : A Scrapbook Look at Eleanor Roosevelt's Remarkable Life. This incredibly easy-to-read scrapbook of the life of one of our most influential first ladies includes photographs, primary source documents and many personal stories.

Fleming again uses her signature scrapbook style of writing in The Lincolns. Not only will you learn about Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln's lives together, there are several chapters devoted to the Civil War and Mary Todd's life after the assassination.

If you loved The Greatest Showman, be sure to pick up a copy of The Great and Only Barnum, which gives an in-depth look at the real story behind the greatest show on earth.

And speaking of great showman, Presenting Buffalo Bill is the story of how William Cody became "Buffalo Bill" and sifts out the truths from the legend.

Fleming's latest title is also about a star of the stage, Strongheart. It is not an actual biography, but a story based on the life of this canine silent movie star from the 1920s that will have you barking and howling along with his journey from police dog to film star..
