Did you know that CPL has resources to support your child as they are learning to read? Even while your child is learning to read on their own, they still benefit from shared family reading time with you!
Learning to read can be challenging. Keep a shared reading routine with your child to continue to build positive experiences around books and reading!
Here are some more tips for reading with a child who is learning to read:
- When your child is learning to read, their listening comprehension is stronger than their reading comprehension. Choosing longer or more complicated books that are at your child's interest level will keep them engaged and continue to expand their vocabulary.
- Try taking turns reading. You read a sentence or paragraph and have your child read the next one. Your child may be focusing on how to read, and your reading helps to keep the story alive.
- Think about your child’s interests and select a variety of books on that topic—don’t forget about non-fiction!
- Be a good model for your child. Pause at commas and periods. Change your voice inflection when you read questions or exclamations. Show what you do when you come to a word you don’t know (even if you're faking it). Modeling what being a fluent reader looks like for your child will help them grow their own fluency skills.
- Book series are a great choice. Once your child is invested in characters, they will be eager to find out what happens next!
Here are some great books for children learning to read:
