Game On! Games in Fiction

Coming up on February 6 is the next 1st Saturdays: Careers In Focus: Gaming, opens a new window. On this first one of the year we'll be geeking out with professionals in the gaming industry, so get your gaming fill before then with some of these awesome gaming books.

Graphic novels are a great place to start for gaming fiction and one of my all-time favorite graphic novels is SideScrollers by Matthew Loux. Brian, Brad and Matt have been content to just hang out, eat junk food and play video games now that high school is over. The guys go on a wild adventure when they try to get Matt's crush to blow off her date with their high school bully. Lobster rescues, an angry mob of girl scouts, a satanic cat and a truly epic hadouken make this a hilarious must-read graphic novel.

Bestselling author James Dashner's newest series, The Mortality Doctrine, revolves around a world plugged in to virtual reality gaming. It's called VirtNet and it's being stalked by a rogue player named Kaine, who is trapping gamers in the system. After watching a trapped gamer commit suicide to escape, Michael and his friends Bryson and Sarah agree to work with VirtNet Security to help track down and stop Kaine. But nothing is what it seems, especially in virtual reality. Check out the first book of the trilogy, The Eye of Minds.

While sometimes it can seem like online and video games are the ONLY games, tabletop RPG fans have representation in Guy in Real Life by Steven Brezenoff. Lesh is an all-black-wearing metalhead who loves MMO games and Svetlana, who he models one of his avatars after. Svetlana makes her own clothing and is a RPG master. After Lesh rescues Lana from a creepy guy's gross behavior, they start to bond over Lesh's gaming adventures and Lana's attempt at keeping her RPG club alive.
