Fantasy Books Headed to the Small Screen

Looking for a new series to fill that Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your heart? The next big thing is just around the corner! Here are a few fantasy book series that have upcoming TV shows to enjoy.

The Last Wish (The Witcher series): Geralt, the series' protagonist, is a witcher—a supernatural beast hunter who travels the land making a living hunting monsters. The Witcher, which originated as a series of novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, was turned into a comic book series by Dark Horse Comics, and it's inspired three highly regarded video games. Best of all, Netflix has turned it into a TV show, premiering at the end of this year.

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time series): This completed series consists of 14 books, but Amazon Prime has started production on a show that will focus on the plot of the first book. It chronicles Moiraine, a magic channeler, who is searching for the Dragon Reborn—a reincarnation of the person prophesied to save or destroy humanity. This series is a particularly good fit for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and high fantasy.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials series): Philip Pullman’s trilogy begins in a Victorian-era world not unlike our own. The main character, Lyra, and her daemon, a shape-shifting manifestation of Lyra’s inner self, witness someone attempting to poison her uncle, setting into motion an adventure that spans not just the globe, but the entire universe. The TV series starring Lin-Manuel Miranda premiered November 4 on HBO.
