Celebrate National Kitten Day!

Want an excuse to read about the goofy and cute little cats? You're in luck!

This National Kitten Day (July 10th), I wanted to recommend some purrfectly fun, newish graphic novels for kids that celebrate my cat's adorable purrsonalities.

Playful and Energetic: Squiggles is insatiable when it comes to playing. She adores batting at or chasing toys, too, much like Kitten Ninja. Three sweet, simple stories — The Box, The Leaf and The Tower — share Ninja Cat’s daily (and silly) adventures. We even learn that Ninja prefers a laundry basket to her bed (much like my goofy kitten). A purrfect read for ages 5 to 7.

Curious and Adventurous: Felix lives dangerously, climbing up bookshelves and window screens or jumping on the kitchen counter to try stealing our “human food.” He’s definitely naughty and often reminds me of Bad Kitty. I’m a long-time fan of this series and love how this new book captures when Kitty was “good” in a hilarious A to Z list. Full of sarcastic wit, we learn that Kitty became "bad" when a gigantic, slobbery puppy arrived in her home on her birthday. Not surprisingly, Kitty tries to ruin this Puppy’s birthday party... but softens after learning about Puppy’s hard beginnings. A purrfect read for ages 8 to 10.

Affectionate and Cuddly: Jamboree is very loving and much like many of the cats depicted in the vignettes with sweet sketches of Yokai Cats. Yokai Cats are from the sea, adored for their charming cuteness. I found a few like mine in this collection, such as Keukegen, a long-haired gray cat whose gets in the way when its human is cleaning, or Warai Onna, who makes you smile just by looking at him. Jamboree is most like Baku, because her favorite place is on top of you when you’re sleeping. A purrfect read for ages 11 to 13.
