June is a prime time for endless celebrations. We have Pride Month, the First Day of Summer, Juneteenth, and the opening of the Obama Presidential Library Center. But did you know about Black Music Month? Black Music Month is celebrated annually in June, recognizing the talent and contributions of Black musical artists. Designated by Jimmy Carter in 1979, the month honors genres spanning jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and more. Here are some recommendations for your Black Music Month Playlist.
The movie Sinners celebrates Black music across all genres. It also reminds us that blues music is timeless, thanks to the surprise appearance of Buddy Guy. His 20th studio album, Ain't Done With the Blues , lets us know he is still a beloved Chicago icon. Throughout eighteen tracks, he masters storytelling through his music. It's been eleven years since Jill Scott released her previous album, Woman. Her new album, To Whom This May Concern, is the poetic, soulful, and comforting album we need. Leon Thomas highlights his vocal and songwriting prowess in his Grammy-winning album, Mutt. His ballads and mid-tempo songs tells stories of love lost, betrayal and empty relationships.
