Sure, I guess there's no place like home, but this is the time of year when I'm usually planning my next escape. Travel is an essential part of my life and, unfortunately, getting out of town isn't always easy to do. What I love most about reading (and I'm sure you can relate) is that amazing stories can take me to far-off lands and offer a taste of a new experience even when time and money aren't exactly abundant.
When I'm lucky enough to have a big trip planned, it's fun to match my reading to my travels. There's nothing quite like reading the medieval classic The Letters of Abelard and Heloise while visiting Paris' Père Lachaise Cemetery where the tragic lovers are presumed to be buried.
Or how about Wild, Cheryl Strayed's emotional memoir of self-discovery, while camping or hiking?
This summer, I'm venturing west to San Francisco. I'll be reading San Francisco Noir 2, a collection of the best crime writing from the Bay Area including Dashiell Hammett and Bill Pronzini.
