Abstract

List of additional illustrations, photographs and documents bound into an extra-illustrated set of volumes of History of Chicago from the Earliest Period to the Present Time in Three Volumes by A.T. (Alfred Theodore) Andreas, with the corresponding catalog reference: F548.3.A5 1885.

Biographical/Historical

A.T. (Alfred Theodore) Andreas (1839-1900) was an American book publisher and historian. Published over the course of three years from 1884 to 1886, his 3-volume history of Chicago contains a collection of facts, anecdotes, biographical sketches and maps.

These extra-illustrated volumes contain additional photographs and illustrations to accompany the historical narratives and biographical accounts of business leaders, clergy, doctors, lawyers and every other category of people. The volumes have numerous illustrated accounts of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Other topics include the arts, benevolent institutions, the Board of Trade, early Chicago, the Chicago Harbor, the city’s corporate history, commerce, Fort Dearborn, insurance, journalism, hospitality, law, masons, medicine, politics, real estate, religion and trade.

Scope and Contents

This is an extra-illustrated version of the 3-volume set of A.T. (Alfred Theodore) Andreas’s 1884-1886 History of Chicago publications in which each volume is broken into nine parts. The resulting unique edition contains hundreds of additional illustrations, maps and photographs. The added images augment the textual content, and the volumes were rebound so they would appear in the vicinity of people and scenes that they depict. Many of the added engravings were produced by Chicago’s Century Publishing & Engraving Company.

Volume 1 is in two parts; Volume 2 is in three parts and Volume 3 is in five parts. Volume 3, Part 3 is missing. The set also includes an original title page, title pages for the parts and indexes.

The published illustrations are listed along with the added materials.

Arrangement

Illustrations are listed in the order they appear in the volumes. The publication date for the volume has been used for all illustrations that were printed and intended as part of its production. These images have also been described as “illustration.” The phrase “copy of” has been used to distinguish between actual photographs that have been inserted into the volume parts and those that were likely extracted from other publications. The additional illustrations have been assigned page numbers that correspond to their placement along with a letter to distinguish them from those produced as part of the book and appear on a printed page.

Arrangement

Illustrations are listed in the order they appear in the volume. The publication date for the volume has been used for all illustrations that were printed and intended as part of its production. These images have also been described as “illustration.” The phrase “copy of” has been used to distinguish between actual photographs that have been inserted into the volume parts and those that that were likely extracted from other publications.

The additional illustrations have been assigned page numbers that correspond to their placement along with a letter to distinguish them from those produced as part of the book and appear on a printed page.
