Included is the Peggy Lebold Miniature Book Collection along with books and printed keepsakes from other sources such as Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. and the Miniature Book Society.

Biographical/Historical

A miniature book is a very small book, typically no larger than three to four inches in any dimension, depending on the standard set by a collector or book society. The format has been around for many centuries and utilized by cultures around the world.

Miniatures can be further classed into four size categories: Ultra Micro Mini (a book measuring smaller than ¼ inches), Micro Mini (a book measuring in between ¼ and 1 inch), Mini (a book measuring in between 1 and 3 inches) and a Macro Mini (a book measuring between 3 and 4 inches).

Popular types of miniature books include almanacs, Bibles, Qur'ans, dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, short stories, verse, famous speeches, children's stories, artist books and the miniaturization of well-known books.

Biographical Note

Peggy P. Lebold (1897-1982) is a noted Chicago antiquarian collector. She married Foreman Michael “Mike” Leopold in 1936. Mike Leopold, the eldest Leopold family son, changed his last name to Lebold following the notoriety of his brother Nathan Leopold’s murder conviction along with Richard Loeb in 1924. Mike Lebold ran the Morris Paper Mill and was a noted collector of publications, letters and artifacts related to Abraham Lincoln.

Scope and Contents

Series 1 contains 163 titles collected by Peggy Lebold. Lebold kept many of the titles in her collection in custom-made miniature bookcases, one of which revolves and holds 38 books of The Ellen Terry Shakespeare published in Glasgow, Scotland by David Bryce and Son Publishers. Her collection also includes one of the smallest books ever created, The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam from 1932, with dimensions of 0.5cm x 1 cm. Lebold’s miniature bookplates measure 1 x 1 cm or 0.5 x 0.5 cm have been affixed to the inside pastedown of her collection except for some ultra micro mini books where this was not possible. The original book placement in Lepold’s custom cases has been maintained when possible. These bookcases are referred to as boxes in the inventory in keeping with the library’s archival descriptive practices. Boxes provided by the archives, however, do not include shelf numbers. All books are measured in centimeters length by width by depth.
