Teen Voices: Featuring Princetanue

Each month we spotlight a teen at CPL.

Princetanue visits Lozano YOUmedia to hang out with friends, play games and do homework.

Q: What's your favorite program at the library? What do you like about it?

A: The tabletop gaming program at YOUmedia. I like that it brings the best players to the table, our strategies are challenged and I get to learn different winning techniques. In the game Splendor, I've won a great deal just by studying the techniques of others and it has taught me that adapting to winning strategies correlates with having a very successful life. Lastly, the program allows me to have a great time with friends and meet new people: the challengers.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: Playing sports like soccer or basketball, gaming with my friends at YOUmedia, winning at foosball, playing air hockey, watching TV and doing challenging math like calculus/pre-calculus.

Q: What's your favorite book, author and/or genre?

A: My favorite book is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey because he shows me ways to solve teenage problems like choosing an identity, being proactive and how to find success in life. My favorite genre is fiction, such as The Sisters Grimm, Wonder, Number the Stars, and The Hunger Games series. I also like historical nonfiction books, including Night by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. In this book, the author shares experiences at Auschwitz and other concentration camps.

Q: How has the library been a part of your life? What do you like to do there?

A: The library has been an important part of my life and soul, from the amount of resources I have there to the friends I get to hang out with outside of school. At the library, I like to play a wide variety of tabletop games that I had never been introduced to before; I learn a lot about strategy, specifically how people rely on their tactics. I also play online games like Diep.io. I work hard to maintain excellent school grades and the library allows me to find the right balance in my life as this is where I get to do homework research and where I get to have fun. It is also a place where I can get career advice and feel motivated to get to my goal: Harvard University.

YOUmedia is the place I look forward to every day with much excitement after long hours at school. The staff are a lot of fun, and even though I am not from the Pilsen community, YOUmedia helps me feel like I belong.

Thanks, Princetanue, and good luck in your next gaming competition!
