Get Ready for the Holidays, Learn to Code with the Maker Lab

Season's greetings, makers!

Holiday Open Shops

This week we have six extra hours of Open Shop in the Maker Lab to help you get started with your holiday making. Stop by between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday or Saturday. Try a quick make, like the 3D printed gyroscopic snowflake ornament, the laser cut snowflake ornament or a 3D printed magnet for someone on your gift list.

Hour of Code Events

This year the Maker Lab is participating in the Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week, December 8-14. Learn how to use Scratch, a fun introduction to programming concepts, and how to use Scratch with the Finch Robots. You can even use Scratch to create your own holiday greeting card.

We'll hear from Sara Trice, a Ruby on Rails engineer and web developer with 15 years of experience in information technology. If you're wondering where to start with coding, or what opportunities are available, bring your questions for a lively discussion. Keep an eye on the calendar as events are added. We'll be using Codeacademy, so if you can't make it, you can still do something fun like Animate Your Name in JavaScript.

Get Scanned in the Lobby

On Monday, December 15, stop by the Harold Washington Library Center Grand Lobby between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to get scanned. Come back during Open Shop and print a mini bust to keep or give to a friend!
