Abstract

The Englewood Newspaper Collection is a small collection of newspapers published in or about the community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Biographical/Historical

The Englewood neighborhood is seven miles south of the Loop. The neighborhood stretches from Garfield Boulevard south to roughly 76th Street. Racine Avenue forms the western edge of the neighborhood, while the eastern boundary diverges. Englewood joined the city of Chicago as part of the large annexations of 1889. Englewood is number 68 of the 77 official communities in Chicago.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains various issues of neighborhood newspapers published in or about the community between 1878 and 1934. Of note are the papers that were published prior to Englewood’s annexation to Chicago in 1889.
