Teens: Submit Your Art to Teen Winter Challenge to Win Prizes

Illuminate the world with art this winter by participating in CPL’s sixth annual Teen Winter Challenge! Chicago teens, submit a digital portfolio of 1 to 3 original artworks and an artist statement to win a gift card to Blick Art Materials.

Submissions that demonstrate talent, creativity and originality will be exhibited at our virtual Teen Winter Gala and compiled into a Teen Winter Challenge catalog that will be added to the YOUmedia Zine collection.

Submission Guidelines

Who: High school students 13 to 19 who live in Chicago.

What: Submit a portfolio of 1 to 3 original works in a digital format using the form below by February 28.

Portfolio submissions must contain 1 to 3 original creative works from the past year and can represent a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, film, photography, fashion, craft, etc. Your portfolio must also include an artist’s statement of around 250 words. Your statement should address the following:

  • Indicate the materials and mediums used to create the piece(s), as well as the meaning, intention or inspiration behind each piece.
  • Provide context for you the artist, indicating your prior experience, your artistic interests and your goals for the future.

When/where: Submit your works between December 1 and February 28 using the form below.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of Chicago Public Library staff as well as guest judges from the Chicago arts community. Evaluation will be based on the clarity of the artist’s statement, the passion to create and the artistic merit of the piece(s).

Prizes

Works that demonstrate passion, talent, creativity and originality will be exhibited at our virtual Teen Winter Gala. A digital copy will be permanently entered into the Chicago Public Library collection. From these works, up to 12 exceptional pieces will receive one of the following prizes:

Senior Achievement Award

Open to high school seniors.

  • Grand prize: $150 gift card 
  • First and second runners-up: $100 gift card 
  • Honorable mentions (3): $50 gift card

Young Artist Award

Open to high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

  • Grand prize: $100 gift card 
  • First and second runners-up: $50 gift card 
  • Honorable mentions (3): $25 gift card

    • By submitting your portfolio, you authorize Chicago Public Library to post your work on our website, along with your first name.
    • Winners will be notified by spring 2021.
