Wonder-ful Readalikes for Kids

In the past five years, the love for Wonder by R.J. Palacio has grown and grown. Palacio's story about Auggie Pullman, a fifth-grader with craniofacial differences who must find his way through middle school, had an impact on millions of readers. Readers were thrilled to spend more time in Auggie's world through Auggie & Me and 365 Days of Wonder.

With the release of the Wonder movie just days away, here are for even more stories for fans of Wonder.

Auggie reminds us that first impressions don't tell the whole story. In Out of My Mind, people assume Melody is stupid because her cerebral palsy doesn't allow her to speak. When she gets a computer that can talk for her, her classmates learn she is incredibly smart, but being different is still challenging. Is Melody strong enough to overcome it?

Out of My Mind is available in multiple formats.

R.J. Palacio used several characters to tell the story in WonderSave Me A Seat is also written with  multiple narrators. Fifth-graders Ravi and Joe are different from the other kids in their class. Ravi just moved from India and gets teased for his accent while Joe has trouble focusing when there are too many sounds. When both boys are bullied by their classmate, Dillon, they'll have to get past their assumptions about each other to overcome their shared problem.

Save Me a Seat is available in multiple formats.

In Wonder, Julian makes school tough for Auggie. Twerp tells the story of a different Julian, a bully who thinks he isn't one. Sixth-grader Julian Twerski and his friends were suspended after violently bullying a neighbor boy with some disabilities. Julian's teacher makes him write a journal about what happened. The process of writing helps Julian learn more about himself, gain empathy for others and learn how to make things right.

Twerp is available in multiple formats.

Chicago Public Library celebrates Wonder each year during Choose Kind month in October.
