The American Library Association on Monday announced its picks for the very best books published for kids in the last year. Kids, parents, teachers and librarians from across the globe try to guess which books will be picked from among the thousands published each year and hope against hope that their favorite gets picked. We've compiled the winners here; did your favorite make the list?
Newbery Medal
Kwame Alexander, our January Author of the Month, won the Newbery Medal for The Crossover, his novel in verse, which tells the coming of age story of basketball-loving twins Josh and J.B.
Cece Bell won a Newbery Honor for her autobiographical graphic novel, El Deafo, and Jacqueline Woodson won a Newbery Honor for her autobiographical novel in verse, Brown Girl Dreaming.
Caldecott Medal
Dan Santat won the Caldecott Medal for The Adventures of Beekle, the epic quest of an imaginary friend who wanted to do the unimaginable. Six Caldecott Honor books were also named.
Coretta Scott King Author Award
Jacqueline Woodson won the Coretta Scott King Author Award for Brown Girl Dreaming. Three Coretta Scott King Author Honor books were also named.
Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award
Christopher Myers won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for his stunning collages, which illuminate the work of ballet dancer Misty Copeland in Firebird. Two Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor books were also named.
Pura Belpré Author Award
Marjorie Agosín won the Pura Belpré Author Award for I Lived on Butterfly Hill, the story of a girl forced to leave her parents in their beloved Chile when a dictator takes over the country. Juan Felipe Herrera also won a Pura Belpré Honor for his Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes.
Pura Belpré Illustrator Award
Yuyi Morales won the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award for her magical portrayal of art and the artist in Viva Frida. Three Pura Belpré Illustrator Honor books were also named.
