The Warmth of Other Suns: One Book, One Chicago 2013-14

Instead of just one month spent with a great book, starting in 2013, we're spending a year exploring a great theme through books, films, performances, lectures, storytelling and art.

We looked at how migration has shaped—and continues to shape—Chicago. We started by reading Isabel Wilkerson’s award-winning The Warmth of Other Suns. Then we worked with our many community partners to offer multiple ways for every Chicagoan to explore how the drive to move, to migrate and to create a better life has made Chicago into the most American of American cities.
