Celebrating Deaf Awareness Month for Kids

Did you know that Deaf Awareness Month is celebrated in September? Its purpose is to increase awareness of Deaf issues, people, culture and language. Additionally, the International Week of the Deaf is celebrated worldwide by most countries the last week in September. 

What It's Like to Be Deaf

Have you ever wanted to know more about what it's like to be deaf? These books can answer questions that you may have been afraid to ask.

Perhaps you have a new friend who's deaf. My Friend Is Deaf and Some Kids Are Deaf are sure to answer some of those questions.

What Is It Like to Be Deaf? follows the lives of several deaf kids. Some of these kids are from Illinois and attend the Illinois School for the Deaf.

You Don't Know Everything, Jilly P! may be fiction, but its story is very authentic and accurately portrays what life could be like if you have a new sibling or friend who is deaf.

For Older Kids

Older kids may enjoy these books that explore different issues, such as being a CODA (child of a Deaf adult). Myron Uhlberg's The Sound of Silence tells the story of growing up hearing with Deaf parents.

El Deafo is based on author Cece Bell's personal experience with hearing loss since childhood.

Show Me A Sign gives readers a glimpse of a deaf girl and her family living in Chilmark of Martha's Vineyard in the 1800s where everyone signed no matter whether they were deaf or hearing.
