Cultural and Civic Conversations: Watch Past Library Events on the Web

You know Chicago Public Library hosts many engaging and exciting cultural and civic events throughout the year. Many of these events are recorded by Chicago's community television station, CAN-TV, and made available on the web for those who missed the event in person. Here are a few of our favorite events!

Books and Authors

• Author Elliott J. Gorn discussed his book Let the People See: the Story of Emmett Till. View Gorn's event on YouTube. 
• The Poetry Foundation celebrated Poetry Day 2019 and the 30th anniversary of the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship with a reading by some of the 2019 Fellows. View the poetry event on YouTube. 
• The Society of Midland Authors co-presented noted author Jonathan Eig discussing his recent book Ali. View Eig's event on YouTube. 
• Author Andrew Diamond discusses the big-picture narratives of Chicago's transformation over the 20th century, including the evolution of the city's politics, culture and economy, as presented in his book Chicago on the Make. View Diamond's event on YouTube. 

Science

• The Chicago Council on Science and Technology presented a program on the Array of Things. Array of Things is a collaborative effort among leading scientists, universities, local government and communities to collect real-time data on urban environment, infrastructure and activity for research and public use. • Dirk Morr, professor of theoretical physics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in collaboration with the Chicago Council on Science and Technology, discussed the physical laws and concepts underlying the scientific advances portrayed in the Star Wars movies. View Morr's event on YouTube. 
• The Chicago Council on Science & Technology and The Leakey Foundation presented Dr. Bernard Wood. Wood surveyed the history of attempts to find the earliest members of the genus Homo, including very recent and controversial additions, during his lecture. View Wood's event on YouTube. 

Civics and Culture

• In honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, a panel of political experts shared their personal memories and insights. View the 1968 convention commemoration on YouTube. 
• The 2017 Cindy Pritzker Lecture on Urban Life & Issues featured David Simas, CEO of the Chicago-based Obama Foundation, discussing his life and work, as well as future plans of the Obama Foundation. View Simas' event on YouTube. 
• During our music-themed One Book, One Chicago season, we hosted a panel discussion celebrating the life and legacy of the godfather of Chicago House music, Frankie Knuckles, with panelists DJ Heather, DJ Ralphi Rosario, Frederick Dunson, Joel Hall and Joe Shanahan.
