Celebrating LGBT Pride: Great Reads for Teens

Every year since 1971, the American Library Association has awarded the Stonewall Book Award to titles in adult literature, nonfiction and children's and young adult literature that contain exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience. This year the Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Young Adult Literature Award went to Beautiful Music for Ugly Children and Fat Angie.

To help celebrate LGBT Pride Month, here are some more good reads chosen from past and present Stonewall Book Award winners and honorees.

In Fat Angie, Angie is constantly bullied over her weight and over an episode that happened at school. It takes new girl KC coming into town to shake up Angie's ideas about herself, her family and what others think of her. The friendship that KC and Angie form tests the strength of two girls figuring out who they are in a crazy world that has dealt them some difficult hands.

Drama is not only the title, but also the setting of another great book. Callie works on stage crew and LOVES it. She makes friends with twin boys during the production of the school play, but her feelings for one of them are not returned as he begins to discover his true identity. This graphic novel is a fun look at middle school and all the drama that takes place inside and out of school.
