Chicago Artists Featured in Painting Exhibits

We're featuring the exhibits Get Into the Groove: Paintings by Sue Armstrong Arends and Michael Banning – Views from Mendell Street through October 24 in the north exhibit cases on the 8th floor of Harold Washington Library Center.

Sue Armstrong Arends paints on corrugated cardboard with acrylic paint. She captures everyday and sometimes whimsical objects, current and past, utilizing a bold color palette. At times the corrugations are obvious, while with other paintings the viewer must search to find them.

Michael Banning's oil paintings depict the industrial corridor at the Chicago River and Cortland Street on Chicago’s Near Northwest Side, juxtaposing gritty industry with picturesque views of the skyline and river in this rapidly transitioning area. Banning will give an Artist Talk at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 18.

These exhibits are part of Chicago Artists Month 2014, the 19th annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant art community presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
