Archer Heights Staff Share Favorite Books of 2014

The staff at Archer Heights Branch are happy to share their favorite reads from the past year.

Margot from circulation said Jennifer Lopez's "beautiful" autobiography, True Love, struck her with its honesty and heartfelt reflections.

Lisa, our head of circulation, picked Sight Unseen for its "very strong female characters." This detective story by Iris Johansen centers on a woman who "was born blind, and until a surgery in her late teens restored her vision, she developed incredibly heightened senses," which she uses to fight crime.

Reference librarian Bill recommends We Others, a collection of "very unusual and original" stories by Steven Millhauser. "The flawless beauty of his writing style matches the eeriness and originality of his story ideas. I want to buy dozens of copies of We Others and give them to friends, donate them to libraries, leave them on trains and buses. If you love reading, read this book."

Elizabeth, our branch manager, says Alistair McGrath's If I Had Lunch With C. S. Lewis "is a must-read for anyone who asks questions about 'who am I,' 'why am I here in this world' and 'what’s the purpose of my life.'" Although "one doesn’t have to know about C.S. Lewis to enjoy the book," "those who do... will appreciate McGrath’s elegant narrative about Lewis’ reflections on the meaning of life."

Teen librarian Abby has been enjoying CPL's collection of outstanding comics, particularly the ongoing series Saga. Readers can tune in to subtextual commentary about war, terrorism and politics, or simply enjoy the beautifully drawn panels and captivating plot.
