The winners of the National Critics Circle Awards have been announced.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie took the fiction prize with her novel Americanah, beating out finalists Alice McDermott (Someone), Javier Marias (The Infatuations), Ruth Ozeki (A Tale for the Time Being), and Donna Tartt (The Goldfinch).
Sheri Fink won the general nonfiction category with Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital.
Anthony Marra won the first ever John Leonard Prize, a new award for the best first book in any genre, with his book A Constellation of Vital Phenomena.
Amy Wilentz won best autobiography for Farewell, Fred Voodoo: A Letter From Haiti, while Leo Damrosch won for best biography for Jonathan Swift: His Life and His World. Franco Moretti won best criticism for Distant Reading and Frank Bidart won best Poetry for Metaphysical Dog.
