Connect to the WiFi
All Chicago Public Library locations offer free WiFi. All you need is a wireless-enabled device. No special encryption settings, usernames or passwords are required.
The SSID (Service Set ID) is CPLWIFI. You will need to click “Accept” to accept the Limitations and Disclosures and connect to CPL’s WiFi network.
Instructions
Windows 7/Vista/XP
- Right-click on the WiFi network icon on the right side of the Taskbar.
- A window with available network connections will open.
- Select CPLWIFI from the list of available connections.
- Open any Internet page and choose Accept to connect to the Library’s WiFi network.
Windows 8
- From the Start screen, open the Charms Bar.
- Select Settings in the Charms Bar.
- Select the wireless network icon in the notification area.
- Select CPLWIFI from the list of available connections, then tap or click Connect.
- Choose Accept to connect to the Library’s WiFi network.
Macintosh OS X
- Click on the AirPort Icon on the right side of the Menu Bar.
- Select CPLWIFI from the list of visible WiFi networks.
- Open any Internet page and choose Accept to connect to the Library’s WiFi network.
If you successfully connect, you will be taken to the Chicago Public Library’s website.
Troubleshooting
If you do not see CPLWIFI in the list of available connections, try moving to a different location to get closer to a wireless access point.
If your device does not connect, you may need to adjust the following settings:
- WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy): Disable WEP encryption
- DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): Obtain an IP address automatically
- DNS (Domain Name Server): Obtain DNS server address automatically

Limitations and Disclosures
The Library’s wireless network is not secure, and the Library cannot guarantee the safety of your traffic across its wireless network. The Library assumes no responsibility for the configurations, security or files on your device resulting from connection to the Library’s network. Information sent to or from your device can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and appropriate software.
The Library is not able to provide technical assistance. If you need assistance, contact the manufacturer of your laptop or software.
