Q & A with Tom Angleberger

Where did you get your idea for this book?
I saw a wonderful origami Yoda online by a Japanese paper folder named Fumiaki Kawahata. Since I love Star Wars and I love origami I wanted to have one. But the instructions looked IMPOSSIBLE! So I decided to try making a really simple one. It only looked a little like Yoda... BUT it did fit on my finger! And that it what inspired the book!
What was your favorite book when you were growing up?
My favorite serious books, were the Lloyd Alexander series beginning with The Book of Three. My favorite funny books were the Bagthorpe books by Helen Cresswell and Daniel Pinkwater's Lizard Music, Snark out Boys, Alan Mendelsohn, etc...
How old were you when you started writing?
In the fifth grade I won 10 bucks for an essay about the flag or something. TEN BUCKS!
What is your favorite word?
Frinkly
What is your favorite book about Chicago?
That is really hard to pick since so many of Pinkwater's books are set in Chicago... I'll go with Lizard Music, but I think it may be the Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death that give you the best feel for the city.
