Review:
A Long Way From Chicago is a book about a boy, Joey, and his little sister, Mary Alice, going to visit there Grandma Dowdel in the country each summer during the Great Depression. One of the main characters is Grandma Dowdel and she has a unique way of showing the kids how she lives in the country. The book is from Joey’s perspective and he tells about all the fun, and sometimes unexpected, adventures they go on. During their visit they both get to see their first corpse. The corpse is Shotgun Cheatham; he was almost as famous as Al Capone. Through out the book they mention and talk about some very famous people. Some are Shotgun Cheatham, Shirley Temple, John Dillinger, and Al Capone. This book has unforgettable characters that make you laugh and make you realize that everything has a point. The characters are very unique and they each have a certain way of handling their own situations. The way it’s told, makes you feel as if you are seeing, hearing, and experiencing everything that is happening. My favorite things about the book are the descriptions and all the funny stories, some of them I can even relate to. I definitely recommend this book for all ages. So if you like a book with comedy, adventure, and a little bit of history then this is the book for you.
