Book Title: Al Capone Shines My Shoes
Author: Gennifer Choldenko
Review:Over this exciting winter break, I read Al Capone Shines My Shoes, the sequel to Al Capone Does My Shirts. This exciting action novel written by Gennifer Choldenko is about the life of civilians that live on Alcatraz in the 1930’s. In case you didn’t read the first book, the main characters are Matthew (Moose) Flanagan and his sister Natalie, who has autism. In the first book, Natalie was having trouble getting into a school for autistic children, so Moose sends Al Capone a note asking for help. Natalie gets in a few weeks later, and he is a little worried how that happened. Al Capone sends Moose back two notes saying, “Done.” and “Your Turn”. He attempts to keep this a secret, but it spills out. Al Capone sends another note saying, “My Mae is coming on the 2:00 ferry on Sunday. She loves yellow roses.” So, with the help of his friend, he secretly goes to San Francisco to get them. He succeeds, and gives them to her. Everything seems fine for Moose, but when Natalie comes home, there is a surprise in her suitcase. All these things and more add up to a spectacular and thrilling read.
