Summer Reads for Adults 2011

Mayor Emanuel photo

Dear Friends,

As mayor, and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I encourage you to participate in the Chicago Public Library’s fifth annual adult summer reading program: Book Beats: Summer Reads for Adults.

Chicago is synonymous with excellent music. Not only do Jazz and Blues have their roots in our fair city, but a world-class orchestra, opera company, several internationally renowned music festivals, and thousands of bands, recording companies and artists all call Chicago home. To celebrate the wonderful musicians and their contributions, the Library has selected music as the theme for this summer’s program. Join in with your friends, family and neighbors to read about and explore the world of music with the Chicago Public Library.

Stop by your local library or visit the website to learn more about the many fun events and interesting reading suggestions the Library has put together for Book Beats. Take part in the program throughout the summer as you explore all the music our city has to offer — and create some of your own.

Sincerely,
Rahm Emanuel
Mayor

Welcome to Book Beats: Summer Reads for Adults 2011

Chicago comes alive with music in the summertime! Whether you seek out a favorite band at your local street festival, pass a musician on your way to the L or just catch the hint of a tune through your window from a passing ice cream truck, music is all around us!

This summer we focus on music and musicians as we present Book Beats: Summer Reads for Adults, our fifth annual reading program designed for adults. Visit your local library for a rich experience of the music that fills our world. At your local branch you can find a new favorite artist, read more about famous musicians or discover something new at one of our fun, informative programs that will enhance your enjoyment of music—or even encourage you to make some of your own!

The recommended titles in this guide are only some of the many excellent books written about music and musicians. An extended bibliography is available, or ask your local librarian for recommendations to suit your taste.

Grab your library card and head to your local library! Then use your time on the bus, at the beach or in your own back yard to read, learn and discover more about music this summer!
