Summer Reads for Adults 2010

Dear Friend,

As mayor, and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I invite you to participate in the Chicago Public Library’s fourth annual adult summer reading program: Reading is Art-Rageous: Summer Reads for Adults.

Chicago is home to a vibrant art community—from great museums to store-front galleries, art is everywhere in our fair city. For this reason we have chosen art as our theme for this summer’s program. I encourage you to connect with your friends, family, and neighbors this summer through reading about and exploring art with the Chicago Public Library.

You can learn more about Reading is Art-Rageous: Summer Reads for Adults at your neighborhood Chicago Public Library branch. There you will find reading suggestions for every taste, interesting programs, and fun prizes throughout the summer. I hope you will join with the Chicago Public Library as it continues its efforts to promote lifelong reading and learning through the Reading is Art-Rageous: Summer Reads for Adults program this summer. This summer explore the artistry that our city has to offer, create some of your own art, and get caught in the act of reading!

Sincerely,
Daley's signature

This summer we focus on art in its many forms. In partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago and other Chicago cultural institutions we present Reading is Art-Rageous: Summer Reads for Adults, our fourth annual reading program designed for adults. Come and deepen your understanding of art by reading interesting books about art and artists, or join your neighbors for fun, informative programs that will enhance your enjoyment of art or even teach you how to make some artworks of your own!

The recommended titles in this guide are only some of the many excellent books written about art and artists. An extended bibliography is available online at chipublib.org, or ask your local librarian for some recommendations to suit your taste.

The city of Chicago abounds in public art. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program oversees much of the city’s public art. Artworks are on display throughout the city and the Chicago Public Library houses a world-class collection. The pages of this resource guide illustrate works selected from the Library’s extensive collection of both classic and contemporary works. Feast your eyes on these illustrations and then see the dazzling originals in a Chicago Public Library location near you!

Grab your library card and head to your local library! Then use your time on the bus, at the beach, or in your own back yard to read, learn, and discover more about art and creativity!
