Dear Friends:

As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I invite you to participate in the twelfth One Book, One Chicago program presented by the Chicago Public Library. One Book, One Chicago encourages all Chicagoans to read the same book at the same time and to gather together in discussion with friends and neighbors.

This spring, we have selected Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin, a quintessentially American writer, noted for his novels on sexual and personal identity and sharp essays on the civil rights struggle in the United States. Named in 2005 by Time magazine as one of a hundred best English-language novels published since 1923, this autobiographical work is a beautifully written story of self discovery, hidden sins, guilt and religious awakening.

You can find a copy of Go Tell it on the Mountain at your neighborhood Chicago Public Library or local bookstore. Please join in one of the many readings, book discussions, and special events planned for libraries, bookstores, universities and other local venues throughout April. Sincerely,
