On Friday, November 22, 1985, author James Baldwin spoke at a luncheon sponsored by the Friends of the Chicago Public Library. In addition to Mr. Baldwin, poet Gwendolyn Brooks was honored at this event which took place at the Chicago Cultural Center. To mark the day, Mayor Harold Washington proclaimed the day to be “James Baldwin Day” in Chicago.
