One Book, One Chicago Spring 2006
Introduction
Dear Friends,
As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I invite you to participate in the 10th One Book, One Chicago program presented by the Chicago Public Library. One Book, One Chicago encourages all Chicagoans to read the same book at the same time and to gather together in discussion with friends and neighbors.
This spring, Chicago and its sister city, Moscow, Russia, will join together for the first international One Book, One Chicago, as residents of both cities read and discuss Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Like Chicago, Moscow will present book discussions and dramatic readings featuring this book throughout April.
Solzhenitsyn’s novel follows Ivan Denisovich Shukhov through a day in a Stalinist work camp as he struggles to survive and maintain his dignity in the face of oppression. You can find a copy of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich at your neighborhood Chicago Public Library or bookstore. Please join in one of the many book discussions, readings and other special events planned for libraries and bookstores throughout April.
Sincerely,
Richard M. Daley, Mayor
City of Chicago
