Please join us for a discussion with James Fallows, award-winning author and national correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly. Mr. Fallows will speak about his experiences covering the war in Iraq and his views on the current state of affairs in that country and in this country in the wake of the war. Mr. Fallows will also provide a present-day lens for such transcendent themes as maintaining human dignity and individual identity in the face of oppression, and nations’ obligations within the context of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. This lecture is made possible by the Albert Pick Jr. Fund through the Chicago Public Library Foundation. Panelists will include Dr. Ekaterina Genieva, director general of the All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature, and Professor Emerita Marianna Tax Choldin of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Read One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich at DePaul University
Enroll in “Chicago’s One Book: Issues and Perspectives”
The centerpiece of this interdisciplinary, graduate-level course will be Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. DePaul University invites adults to take this opportunity to read the city’s book selection in a setting that reaches beyond the limits of a book discussion group. This 10-week course meets on Wednesday evenings, beginning March 29 (Prerequisite: bachelor’s degree).
