Introduction

Interpreter of Maladies book cover

Dear Friends,

As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, I invite you to participate in the 11th One Book, One Chicago program presented by the Chicago Public Library. One Book, One Chicago encourages all Chicagoans to read the same book at the same time and to gather together in discussion with friends and neighbors.

This fall, we have selected Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. Winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, Lahiri’s eloquent collection of short stories highlights interpersonal relationships in both India and the United States. The book allows readers a glimpse into the experience of immigrants, expatriates and first-generation Americans living in America yet celebrating their cultural roots.

You can find a copy of Interpreter of Maladies at your neighborhood Chicago Public Library or local bookstore. Please join in one of the many book discussions planned for libraries, bookstores, universities and other local venues throughout October.

Sincerely,
Richard M. Daley
