Julia Alvarez will discuss her life and writing with Chicagoan and Latina author Ana Castillo. Ms. Castillo is an English professor at DePaul University and the author of Peel My Love Like an Onion. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the event. Tickets are not required. Seating is limited.

Julia Alvarez will read from In the Time of the Butterflies and discuss how she came to write about the Mirabal sisters. Ms. Alvarez’s books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the event. Free tickets can be picked up in person only at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum beginning October 1. The discussion of themes and issues raised by the novel will include identity and self-discovery, the juncture of the arts and political resistance, the conflicting roles of personal and social responsibility, and the artist’s role in portraying people and events in history. Study In the Time of the Butterflies at DePaul University
Enroll in “Chicago’s One Book: Issues and Perspectives”
The centerpiece of this interdisciplinary, graduate-level course will be Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies. DePaul University invites adults to take this opportunity to read the city’s book selection in a setting that reaches beyond the limits of a book discussion group. This 10-week course meets on Wednesday evenings, beginning September 8. (Prerequisite: bachelor’s degree).
