SUMMARY:Chicago Public Library Event - Black History Book Club: Ex-slave Revolutionaries
DESCRIPTION:Our Black History Book Club is for young people who read at a grade 6 through grade 9 level.
In February we'll learn the stories of two courageous men who grew up in slavery and fought for freedom. In 1791, Toussaint L'Ouverture led a bloody slave revolt that ended slavery forever in Haiti and eventually won Haiti's independence from France. One generation later, Toussaint's example inspired Denmark Vesey, another former slave, who plotted to liberate his enslaved brethren and execute their cruel masters in the heart of the slaveowning American South. Only one of these revolutionaries actually won his revolution, but both are remembered as heroes of the antislavery movement.
On Tuesday, February 14, we'll meet at 6:30PM for an hour-long discussion of Open the Door to Liberty! : A Biography of Toussaint L'Ouverture by Anne Rockwell. Copies of this book are available for check-out at the Information Desk of the West Town branch.
