DESCRIPTION:<p>The late Mayor Harold Washington was elected Mayor of Chicago 30 years ago this spring.&nbsp; A panel of distinguished guests will discuss Mayor Washington&rsquo;s life and times.&nbsp; Panelists include Peter Nolan, Timuel Black, Salim Muwakkil and Robert Starks.<br><br><strong>Peter Nolan</strong> is a former NBC5 reporter whose book <em><a href='http://www.chipublib.org/search/details/cn/8634429' title='Campaign! in CPL Catalog'><strong>Campaign! The 1983 Election That Rocked Chicago</strong></a></em> is a firsthand account of Washington's election to mayor.<br><br><strong>Timuel Black</strong> is the author of <em><a href='http://www.chipublib.org/search/details/cn/1883226' title='Bridges of Memory Vol. 1'><strong>Bridges of Memory</strong></a></em>, a two-volume history of black Chicago.<br><br><strong>Salim Muwakkil</strong> is a senior editor at <em>In These Times</em>, a host on WVON-AM 1690 and the author of the text in <em><a href='http://www.chipublib.org/search/details/cn/2218035/results/1/' title='Harold! Photographs in CPL Catalog'><strong>Harold! Photographs from the Harold Washington Years</strong></a></em>.<br><br><strong>Robert Starks</strong> is founder of the Harold Washington Institute for Research and Policy Studies at <a href='http://www.neiu.edu/Home/' title='Northeastern Illinois University'><strong>Northeastern Illinois University</strong></a>.<br><br>This event is presented by the <a href='http://www.midlandauthors.com/' title='Society of Midland Authors'><strong>Society of Midland Authors</strong></a>, an organization established in 1915 for published authors in the Midwest.&nbsp; The Chicago Public Library is pleased to co-host this event.<br><br>Seating is available first come, first served and reservations are not required.&nbsp; Selected books will be available for purchase.<br><br>Pictured: Peter Nolan</p>
