DESCRIPTION:<p>You are invited to join our discussion of <em>Exiles</em> by Ron Hansen.&nbsp; This historical novel is based on Gerard Manley Hopkins&rsquo;s return to writing poetry. &nbsp;Hopkins was deeply touched by the tragic deaths of five nuns aboard the German ship <em>Deutschland, </em>which sank in the Thames estuary in&nbsp;1875<em>. </em>&nbsp;The nuns had been exiled from Germany, and Hopkins had reason to identify with them, prompting him to write one of his most famous poems.</p>
