About this event:
Stepson of the Blues: A Chicago Song of Survival is the autobiography of West Side Chicago blues singer and drummer Larry Hill Taylor, who has spent 30 years on stage drumming, singing, band leading and learning the blues from his musical elders. Now in his mid-50s, he has survived the blues life-- family abuse and conflict, gangs, prison, drugs and the streets. Discussing his book, Mr. Taylor describes the challenges of African-American musicians getting recognized in the current economic climate and how blues music might help people cope with today’s problems.
Larry Hill Taylor will appear with co-author Bonni Mckeown.
Larry Hill Taylor is a Chicago blues singer and drummer who grew up in Lawndale during the 1950s and 60s. He appears on records by Wolf, Delmark, and his own AV label.
Bonni McKeown, co-author of Stepson of the Blues, is Larry Hill Taylor’s former manager and piano player, and a member of Maxwell Street Foundation’s advisory board.
