About this event:
Studies show that African-Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes. Lilly USA, LLC, with support from national and local health advocacy organizations, will hold three diabetes education sessions.
These sessions, conducted by a Certified Diabetes Educator, are open to anybody who has or knows someone who has diabetes, or anyone who wants to know more about diabetes, a disease that 3.7 million African-Americans over the age of 20 have.
These sessions will be conducted by Sheila Harmon, RN, MSN, CDE of Access Community Health Network. The three sessions are: Health and Well Being (overall health, meal planning, ethnic eating), Healthy Cooking (cooking traditional dishes using healthier ingredients and methods) and Physical Activity/ Exercise (ideas on ways to be active that fit easily into daily activities). Attendees will receive FREE resources that include the Soul Food Pyramid, Carbohydrate Counting Guide and Soul Food Recipe Sampler.
The Fearless African-Americans Connected and Empowered (F.A.C.E.) Diabetes Initiative is a grassroots movement to help individuals, families, and neighborhoods overcome key barriers to success in living with diabetes.
