You are invited to join our discussion of Exiles by Ron Hansen. This historical novel is based on Gerard Manley Hopkins’s return to writing poetry. Hopkins was deeply touched by the tragic deaths of five nuns aboard the German ship Deutschland, which sank in the Thames estuary in 1875. The nuns had been exiled from Germany, and Hopkins had reason to identify with them, prompting him to write one of his most famous poems.
