Modern Lives & Movements Documentary Screening: The Century of the Self
Date: Sat. November 23, 2013
Time: 2:00 pm
6000 N. Broadway Street
About this event:
As the Edgewater Branch's Modern Lives & Movements series turns to the topic of 'The Science of Sex' in November and December, join us for a screening of select portions of Adam Curtis's critically acclaimed four-part documentary series, The Century of the Self.
In this series, Curtis explores how Sigmund Freud's theory of sexual and aggressive subconscious drives was put to use by those who wished to manipulate consumer behavior and public opinion during the 20th century. Curtis tracks the shift from the sexually repressive, 'Victorian' mores of the 19th century to the sexually expressive ethos associated with the 1960s; he further argues that new forms of social domination were bound up with this sexual liberation. A discussion of the film will follow this screening.
The Edgewater branch's Modern Lives & Movements series will continue to explore the topic of the science of sex in December, via two events: a discussion of Thomas Maier's biography of sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson on Thursday, December 5 at 6:30 PM and a panel discussion on the current state of insight into sexuality, gender, and orientation on Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 PM. Please join us for one or more of these events!
